Forgotten Single-Player FPS Games That Were Once Perfect

The first-person shooter genre is in a strange spot right now. Except for inescapable franchises like Call of Duty and Doom, big publishers have completely abandoned FPS games; conversely, the indie scene has been booming for years, producing one masterpiece after another. Gone are the days of AA releases that would try something new on a decent budget, many of which came, delivered hours of fun, and were promptly wiped from the gaming world's collective memory.

Personally, I love revisiting PC shooters from the late '90s and console games from the 2000s after the genre's controls were codified, as so many of these forgotten gems played well and oozed ambition or charm. Even if they might not have gone down as enduring classics that spawned endless sequels, these single-player FPS games were absolutely top-of-the-line when they debuted, and many of them still offer a decent way to spend a few hours today.

While I am going to mostly pick games that are still enjoyable nowadays, it isn't a priority, and I'm not sticking solely to titles that 100% hold up. In fact, the first FPS game was only perfect in its original context...

Duke Nukem Advance Proved That Portable FPS Games Could Work

For the most part, handheld FPS games were not truly viable until, arguably, the PS Vita, and that system only had a handful of passable shooters. Even during the genre's peak overexposure, developers barely tried to tap into the PSP or Nintendo DS markets, with most attempts being poor ports of home console releases.

However, there was one exception that defied the odds and proved that shooters could work on weak-as-heck portable hardware designed to run top-down RPGs and Tetris in color. Duke Nukem Advance is absurdly fantastic considering the limitations imposed by the Game Boy Advance, and Torus Games expertly worked around the lack of joysticks by combining the R-trigger with the D-pad to allow for smoother movement.

Designed from the ground up, Duke Nukem Advance features everything you want from a portable shooter: fine movement, a satisfying shotgun, sprawling levels, destruction, keycards, and a forgiving auto-aim. Avoiding spin-offs and spiritual successors, this GBA exclusive should be remembered as the final great Duke Nukem game.

Look, I'm not going to pretend anybody should boot up a GBA emulator and play Duke Nukem Advance in 2026, as its appeal vanishes when played outside the context of its original hardware. However, it is still playable.

Alien Breed 3D Challenged Doom And Did An Admirable Job

Yes, The Amiga Had A Top-Notch First-Person Shooter

Alien Breed is primarily associated with isometric shooters, with the series enjoying two relatively fruitful eras during the early '90s and late 2000s. Those games warrant your attention, and I would recommend picking up the second-era trilogy compilation; however, between these two periods, Team17 tried to take the series in a first-person direction, with successful but largely forgotten results.

Released on the Amiga and CD32 after Commodore had already gone bankrupt, Alien Breed 3D was essentially sent out to breathe life into already dead systems. While not quite pulling off a miracle, Team17 crafted a shooter that could stand proudly as an alternative to its competitor, Doom​​​​​. In fact, Alien Breed 3D arguably surpassed id Software's original engine and game by incorporating more complex level design and graphical detail.

Alien Breed 3D actually did really well in Europe, but it never came out in North America or elsewhere in the world. It didn't receive a PS1 or Sega Saturn port, nor was it ever released for MS-DOS. This exclusivity hurt the game's long-term reputation, and a sequel that tried to do too much further damaged it.

Red Steel 2 Should Not Have Been Called Red Steel

Hack And Shoot Your Way Through A Glorious Western Adventure

While Alend Breed 3D's legacy was negatively impacted by a sequel, Red Steel 2 never managed to escape the shadow of its awful predecessor. Ubisoft's Red Steel debuted during the Wii's launch window to widespread disappointment and a hint of mockery, garnering criticism for terrible motion controls and an all-around poor experience. The game was bad and popular enough to sink the young IP, and Ubisoft should have rebranded the sequel rather than link it to one of the most well-known Wii mistakes.

Red Steel 2 fixed every one of the first game's issues; frankly, they barely share anything in common beyond a mix of melee and ranged first-person action. Unlike the "gritty," photorealistic disaster, Red Steel 2 is a hyper-stylized post-apocalyptic blast with cel-shaded visuals that have aged like fine wine. The sequel does a brilliant job of blending character-action combat with gunplay, creating a fluid dance of chaos that can rival the likes of Shadow Warrior.

If you have a Wii sitting around, definitely give Red Steel 2 a try. It holds up.

The Terminator: Future Shock Is Bethesda's Best FPS Game

A Forgotten FPS Game That Nearly Beat Quake To The Punch

Does anybody remember that Bethesda once released a Terminator FPS game? Scratch that, Bethesda released two Terminator games in close succession, and they were both pretty darn good! Released a full year before Quake, The Terminator: Future Shock featured full 360-degree, unconstrained mouse movement, instantly establishing itself as one of the best-feeling and most forward-thinking shooters of its era.

Unlike Doom or Duke Nukem 3D, Future Shock genuinely featured 3D models for its environments and enemies, delivering a state-of-the-art look that is still impressive today (even if it hasn't aged perfectly). Even the level design was quite ambitious for the era, as the campaign typically drops you in open maps set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.

Future Shock was a massive leap forward for single-player shooters, while its successor, Skynet​​​​​, tried to do the same for multiplayer. By then, Quake was already out, so the sequel came a little too late. If Future Shock launched with multiplayer, it might have stolen Quake's thunder.

Peter Jackson's King Kong Is Absurdly Brilliant

Who Knew Movie Tie-In Games Could Be Perfect?

Let's end things with a special case. Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie's perfection requires context. In the mid-2000s, movie tie-in games represented the industry at its absolute worst, consistently offering nothing of value while taking advantage of people's love for the source material. Very few of these releases are worth remembering, let alone playing.

Peter Jackson's King Kong deserves to be remembered, played, and cherished. Created in close collaboration with Peter Jackson, Ubisoft took a risk by stripping away any UI, crafting a cinematic experience that truly captured the magic of the movie. Rather than being another blockbuster shooter, King Kong incorporates survival elements, making its human characters feel truly weak in an environment that can easily spell their doom.

Also, you get to play as Kong. What's not to like? Unfortunately, like most licensed games, King Kong was delisted a long time ago.
