In a post on Bluesky, the worker-run indie studio explained the decision was made to ensure its survival amid a financing drought.
"The games funding landscape has changed radically over the last few years, and unlike previous project cycles, this time we have been unable to secure funding for new projects while developing our current engagements," reads the post.
"As with all our company's operational decisions, this one was made democratically and was motivated by the survival of the studio rather than maximising projects. Our members are regularly updated on our cash flow situation and were made aware of this upcoming shortfall well in advance."
KO_OP confirmed that team leads and elected executives will be impacted by the job cuts. In addition, it noted that any profits from Young Suns—which launched on Xbox but will soon be heading to additional platforms—will still be shared with impacted team members.
The studio is now focused on developing new projects and prototypes while continuing to support the multiplayer life simulator. If KO_OP manages to secure funding in the coming months, it has pledged to rehire as many people as possible.
